Delta State is an oil and agricultural producing State of Nigeria, situated in the region known as the South-South geo-political zone with a population of 4,098,291. The capital city is Asaba, located at the northern end of the State with an estimated area of 762 square kilometres (294 sq mi), while Warri is the economic nerve center of the State and also the most populated. It's located in the southern end of the State. The State has a total land area of 16,842 square kilometres (6,503 sq mi).

SHELL PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENT COMPANY OF NIGERIA (SPDC) is the operator of a Joint Venture Agreement involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which holds 55%, Shell 30%, Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (TEPNG)10% and Nigerian Agip Oil Company limited (NAOC) 5%. In Nigeria, the Shell operated companies SPDC, SNEPCo and SNG employ more than 6000 direct employees and contractors of which over 90% are Nigerians.
Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) operates in the land and swamp areas of the Niger Delta, under a joint venture agreement with NNPC (60%), NAOC (20%), and Oando (20%), with concessions lying within Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers States. The concession covers a total area of 5,313sq.km comprising four blocks - OML 60, 61, 62 & 63. NAOC is also the operator of two onshore exploration leases, namely OPL 282 (90% interest) in the Swamp and OPL 135 (48% interest) in the Land area.
NPDC was established in 1988 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation with responsibility for petroleum exploration and production activities in the hydrocarbon-rich regions of coastal Nigeria, both onshore and offshore. NPDC operations are centered mainly in the Niger Delta and spans five States in Nigeria (Edo, Delta, Imo, Bayelsa and Rivers).
